Levi Mortera

Da molti anni sto cercando notizie sulla famiglia Levi Mortera a cui appartenevano tre dei miei bisnonni, fratelli tra loro. Dei loro genitori so solo che si chiamavano Leone ed Eva Franco, e che erano nati all’inizio del XIX secolo a Livorno. Da qui, dopo l’unità d’Italia, il loro primogenito Giuseppe, emigrò in cerca di fortuna ad Alessandria d’Egitto, che dopo l’apertura del Canale di Suez offriva un ambiente favorevole a giovani capaci e intraprendenti; gli altri figli, Angelo, Eugenio ed Enrico, si trasferirono prima a Firenze e poi a Roma, seguendo gli spostamenti della capitale d’Italia.
La famiglia Levi Mortera, prende il nome da una località nella provincia di Santander in Spagna, da dove, presumibilmente, emigrò dopo la cacciata degli ebrei del 1492. Il personaggio più famoso con questo nome e Rabbi Saul Levi Mortera, maestro di Baruch Spinoza ad Amsterdam, nato a Venezia nel 1596. Sempre a Venezia, nel 1797, durante l’occupazione francese, un altro Saul Levi Mortera, scrivano dell’Università Israelitica, redige un censimento degli ebrei residenti nel Ghetto.

Si fa presente che, nella redazione dell’albero, si è omesso di specificare il cognome, spesso variato per degiudeizzazione in “Mortera” e si sono ripetute nei quattro rami le discendenze dovute ai frequenti matrimoni tra consanguinei.

Depuis plusieurs années je suis a la recherche de nouvelles sur la famille Levi Mortera a laquelle trois de mes aieux appartiennent, qui étaient aussi trois freres. La personne la plus connue portant ce nom est Rabbi Saul Levi Mortera, professeur de Baruch Spinoza a Amsterdam, né a Venise en 1596. Par ailleurs, je vous précise que j'ai omis de spécifier, dans l'arbre généalogique, le nom souvent modifié en Mortera pour des raisons de ''déjudaicité'' et cela c'est répété dans les descendances des quatres branches car il y a eu plusieurs mariages consanguins.

I have been researching for years into the history of the Levi Mortera family, to which three of my great-grandparents belonged. These three brothers were the sons of Leone Levi Mortera and Eva Franco, living in Leghorn (Livorno) at the beginning of the XIX century. After Italy had become a united country, the eldest son sought his fortune in Alexandria (Egypt), while Angelo, Eugenio and Enrico settled first in Florence (Firenze) and then in Rome.
The Levi Mortera family derives its name from a small town near Santander in Spain, which they presumably were forced to leave when Jews were expelled in 1492. The most famous character with this name is Rabbi Saul Levi Mortera, born in Venice (Venezia) in 1596, who is referred to as a teacher of the philosopher Baruch Spinoza in Amsterdam. Another Saul Levi Mortera, also a Venetian, is quoted in history books as the clerk of the Jewish University who drafted a census of the Jews residing in the Ghetto in 1797 when the city was occupied by the French Army of Napoleon.

With the help of these distant relations I hope to fill gaps in the Levi Mortera family tree, which I reconstructed in recent years. NOTES: 1) The surname is omitted along the family tree 2) It was often shortened to “Mortera”, possibly de-Judizing it 3) In the four main branches the offsprings of intermarriages are repeated.
